WE ARE BACK! | SPEAKout Poetry

SPEAKout Poetry was founded upon the tradition of spoken word slam competitions. With the passage of time, this burgeoning organization?has become an alternative platform for established and up-and-coming spoken word artists. In a span of three years, SPEAKout has hosted six spoken word poetry slams (four in Toronto-GTA; one each in Kitchener and Hamilton) and two spoken word workshops.

This fall, a new chapter in SPEAKout?s storybook is about to begin. Are you ready? We hope you are, because this blank page promises to be the beginning of something beautiful.? SPEAKout returns to Toronto in an event that will chart a new course in its three year history.

With this in mind, SPEAKout is delighted to introduce you to its new branch, Ideas Worth Rhyming (IWR), a spoken word festival. The arts especially the art of spoken word poetry and community are at the heart of SPEAKout, hence the name. The aim has always been to inspire, entertain and educate by highlighting points of overlap through purposeful and meaningful entertainment. We found this means through the art of spoken word poetry and our team discovered that spoken word is more than just entertainment. It is a powerful artistic tool that enables poets to use their words by giving power to their voices to speak out in order to bring to light issues and experiences that we all share yet often get overlooked in our society. By raising awareness of certain realities, spoken word engages a generation to use their voice in a constructive and meaningful way.

Being launched on Saturday, October 21, IWR will not be a slam competition. Rather, it will be a two-part daytime festival rooted in bridging the worlds of arts and academia. The event will high light some of today?s most pressing and relevant social issues. These hot topics are to be presented by our poets and guest speakers. Speakers will not only present an idea or concept through their distinct perspectives but also their understanding of what it means to them and how it affects their daily lives. Spoken word poetry first, discussion based workshop second. This shared experience will make it resonate with the listening audience. It is our hope that through this innovative facilitation specialized knowledge to the general public is disseminated. This unique take promises to be both innovative and beneficial way of thinking on a situation.

Taking place at the newly built Regent Park Arts & Cultural Centre, this bold and ambitious project promises to enliven and engage an entire community. To be able unite in sharing knowledge is a powerfully uplifting and humanizing experience. Through enlarging our awareness of shared local and national matters, IWR hopes to inspire positive change by motivating people to get involved in their local communities and seek possible solutions. Therefore, this will enable them to become agents of change in the Canadian society.

IWR is enlightening minds through educative means and artistic expression. It will be the intersection of arts, cultural interaction and innovation by identifying an interconnected world. Once applied, the purpose of this event carries a great potential for benefit of the community and at large, humanity.

Madonna sued in Russia for supporting gays

(AP) ? Some Russian activists have sued Madonna for millions of dollars, claiming they were offended by her support for gay rights during a recent concert in St. Petersburg.

Anti-gay sentiment is strong in Russia. In St. Petersburg, a law passed in February makes it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors, and the author of that law has pointed to the presence of children as young as 12 at Madonna's concert on Aug. 9.

Russian news agencies quote Alexander Pochuyev, a lawyer representing the nine activists, as saying the suit was filed Friday against Madonna, the organizer of her concert, and the hall where it was held, asking for damages totaling 333 million rubles, or nearly $10.5 million.

Responding to criticism that the plaintiffs were stuck in the Middle Ages, the lawyer said they were using civilized, modern methods to defend their rights. "No one is burning anyone at the stake or carrying out an Inquisition," Pochuyev was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying. "Modern civilization requires tolerance and respect for different values."

The complaint includes a video taken at the concert showing Madonna stomping on an Orthodox cross and asking fans to raise their hands to show the pink armbands in support of gays and lesbians that were distributed among the audience, the new agency reported.

Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, did not immediately respond to emails asking for the singer's reaction to the lawsuit.

Madonna also has angered conservative Russians with her support for Pussy Riot. Three members of the punk band were sentenced Friday to two years in prison for a protest inside Moscow's main cathedral against Vladimir Putin and his cozy relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church.

Madonna spoke out in support of the group during her concert in St. Petersburg and two days earlier in Moscow. After the verdict was issued, Madonna called on "all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment."

Republicans Fret About Medicare As Topic A

Connie,

Can you set there and honestly tell me that Romney will not endorse a budget that his entire party and base supports? Romney will stick with Ryans budget.

The biggest ideological values between Obama's and Ryan's plan is that they both try to contain cost in two different ways. Ryan's limits the amount that recpients can pay towards their health program, Obama limits the amount that medicare pays insurance companies and hospitals. In terms of a greater burdence, Obama's plan is the one to go with.

And I have F#%#% told you already that Obama's cuts does not take from medicare's quality. Ryan's does.

Would you rather pick a health care program that does not adequatley cover everything that could go wrong, or have full coverage? Obama's plan is what many people will go with.

Can Facebook Learn From Microsoft, Kodak Mistakes?

PALO ALTO, CA - AUGUST 18: Facebook founder a...When I see a company making bold decisions I find it useful to see what happened when other companies made similarly bold decisions in the past.

In Facebook (FB) I am seeing a lot of Microsoft?s tendency toward invasiveness and a lot Kodak?s oblivion.

I?ll start with the ?Microsoft problem.? Facebook has an astronomical number of users, just like Microsoft (MSFT) used to. Not too long ago, about 99% of microcomputer users relied on Windows. It was a giant, swaggering technology company with profits out the wazoo and a stock price to match.

It wasn?t just that a Federal Trade Commission resulted in an order to break up the company. It was the arrogance of the company. With little organized resistance, Microsoft seemed to use it?s marketshare to shove products down customers? throats they didn?t necessarily need or want.

This is what I?m seeing in Facebook. Heck, this is a company that changes its layout more than many people do their laundry. In the process, it appears to me that Facebook has come to view users as marks rather than customers, with privacy thrown to the wind.

Then there?s the ?Kodak problem.?? The world went digital, and Kodak, which made some rather feeble forays into digital, basically stuck to film with disastrous results. I?m seeing the same hubris over at Facebook. While the world goes mobile, Facebook seems stubbornly glued to the desktop.

Investors were clearly warned about this, but in the face of accelerating mobilization, certain parts of the risk factors in the company?s prospectus are worth looking at again. Specifically:

Growth in use of Facebook through our mobile products, where our ability to monetize is unproven, as a substitute for use on personal computers may negatively affect our revenue and financial results . . . We have historically not shown ads to users accessing Facebook through mobile apps or our mobile Web site.

In March 2012, we began to include sponsored stories in users? mobile news feeds. However, we do not currently directly generate any meaningful revenue from the use of Facebook mobile products, and our ability to do so successfully is unproven . . . If users increasingly access Facebook mobile products as a substitute for access through personal computers, and if we are unable to successfully implement monetization strategies for our mobile users, or if we incur excessive expenses in this effort, our financial performance and ability to grow revenue would be negatively affected.

These ?intangible qualities? aside, then there?s the question of valuation.? Facebook is trading at about 32x the average earnings per share estimate for 2013.? Apple (AAPL)?yes, the same Apple that is about to pay a cash dividend?on the other hand, is trading at 12x?the average earnings per share estimate for 2013.

Special Offer: Want a meatier dividend than Apple?s? Check out high-yielding dividend stocks in the new Forbes Dividend Stock Daily service.? It sends out one great dividend-stock idea every trading day.? Click here for details.

If you applied the Apple multiple to Facebook shares, you would get a price per share of about $7.70.? I?m not sure why the market tolerates these imbalances. Regardless, I know I don?t have to, which is why I won?t buy Facebook, even at these prices.

President Obama to Mars rover team: 'Let me know' if you find Martians (+video)

In a congratulatory phone call to the Curiosity Mars rover team at NASA's Jet?Propulsion?Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., President Obama thanked those who helped land the one-ton robot on the Red Planet's surface, said that he looked forward to Curiosity's discoveries, and jokingly wondered aloud if he should get a mohawk.

The team behind NASA's Mars rover Curiosity's Aug. 5 landing take a call from President Barack Obama on Monday. At center is NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory director Charles Elachi. Obama called the Mars landing 'mindboggling.'

President Barack Obama today (Aug. 13) made a congratulatory phone call to the NASA team behind the last week's flawless landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars, calling the Red Planet touchdown "mind-boggling" to the delight of the rover's flight controllers.

In a call to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he told NASA scientists to let him know if the craft happens to see any Martians.

President Obama said he "could not be more excited" about the car-size rover's mission to explore Mars' Gale Crater over the next two years. The?rover touched down?on the Red Planet Aug. 5 PDT to search for signs that Mars might have once had water and the other conditions thought necessary for life. NASA broadcast the presidential call live on NASA TV.

"If in fact you do make contact with Martians, please let me know right away," President Obama said, "because I've got a lot of other things on my plate, but I suspect that will go to the top of the list, even if they're just microbes."?

The roomful of rover scientists responded with laughter from NASA's?Jet Propulsion Laboratory?in Pasadena, Calif., where the $2.5 billion rover was designed and built, and where its mission operations center is based. [Mars Rover Curiosity's Landing Day at?JPL?(Photos)]

Curiosity landed in dramatic fashion, being lowered to the ground on cables by a hovering "Sky Crane" in a maneuver that NASA described ahead of time as "seven minutes of terror."

"Through your dedicated efforts, Curiosity stuck the landing and captured the imagination and attention of millions of people, not just around the country but people all around the world," President Obama said. "It's really mind-boggling what you've been able to accomplish."

The President thanked the whole science team, specifically naming Charles Elachi,?the director of JPL, Adam Steltzner, lead on Curiosity's entry, descent and landing phase, and other leaders on the project. He also called out another NASA figure who has emerged from the landing as a minor celebrity.

"I understand there's a special?Mohawk guy?that's working on the mission," President Obama said, referring to Bobak Ferdowsi, a Curiosity systems engineer who gained fame for the American flag-themed stars and stripes Mohawk hairdo he sported during the landing. "He's been one of the many stars of the show last Sunday night. I in the past thought about getting a Mohawk myself."

"That's going to be the new fashion at JPL," Elachi responded.

"It does sound like NASA has come a long way from the white shirts and the pocket protectors," the President joked. "You guys are a little cooler than you used to be."

Ultimately, President Obama said he was inspired by everything the team has accomplished so far, and looks forward to the insights Curiosity will provide.

"You guys should be remarkably proud," he said. "It's really what makes us best as a species, is just this curiosity we have and this yearning to discover and know more and push the boundaries of knowledge. You are perfect examples of that and we couldn't be more grateful to you."
