1 injured in attacks in Turkish capital

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Assailants on Tuesday fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the headquarters of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party and hurled two hand grenades at the Justice Ministry's parking lot, slightly wounding one person, officials said.

Interior Minister Muammer Guler said no one was injured in the attack on the ruling Justice and Development Party headquarters, while the spouse of a Justice Ministry employee was treated for a slight injury in the second assault.

Guler said the attack on the party headquarters shattered windows but caused no major damage. Erdogan had left Turkey hours earlier for a visit to Denmark.

The minister said a terrorist group was responsible for the attacks, but he declined to identify it.

The attacks follow a police crackdown on a banned left-wing group, the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front . That group, autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebels and Islamic militants have all carried out attacks in Turkey.

Tuesday's grenade attacks came as Turkey is holding peace talks with the Kurdish rebels' jailed leader, Abdullah Ocalan, in a bid to end a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984. Turkish leaders had warned of possible attacks aimed at derailing the talks.

"We were expecting possible sabotage attempts," Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin told reporters after inspecting the damage at his ministry. "(But) no sabotage attempt can turn us back from this path."

University of California's unofficial favorite sea slug poised to make a comeback

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) After almost four decades of absence from local waters, a special sea slug appears to be making a comeback, and marine scientists at UC Santa Barbara are eagerly anticipating its return.

With its vivid blue and gold colors and its discovery by UC zoologists in 1901, the nudibranch Felimare californiensis, also known as the California chromodorid, has been a favorite species of sea slug for UC marine scientists and students for decades. But while it held a special place in their hearts, it lost its place in local waters, which once included La Jolla, Corona del Mar, Malibu, and Santa Barbara, as well as all but the two westernmost Channel Islands.

"We'll be pretty excited if someone finds the nudibranch in mainland tidepools, after this 35-year hiatus," said Jeff Goddard, project scientist with UCSB's Marine Science Institute. His findings have been published online in a recent edition of the journal Marine Biology.

In the 1970's, the abundant F. californiensis started to disappear from Southern California, and by 1984, was extinct in the region. Its disappearance from the mainland, said Goddard, is unique among the 130 species of sea slugs known to inhabit California waters.

"Its decline is not shared by closely related nudibranchs with similar historical geographic distributions and mode of development," said Goddard, "and is not predicted by warming trends and climate variation over the past 40 years, including the strong El Nio events of 1983 and 1998."

In their paper, Goddard and his collaborators conclude that water pollution from the heavily populated and urbanized southern California mainland is the most likely factor, compounded by historical over-collecting of the nudibranch and habitat loss through the development of major ports and marinas. The researchers suspect that degraded water quality, which reached a low point in the Southern California Bight in the 1970's, affected either the slugs' food sponges or the cyanobacteria that live in a symbiotic relationship with the sponges, especially near the mainland.

However the deep blue slug with the bright gold spots reappeared in 2003 off Santa Catalina Island, and in 2011 the rare and highly sought animal was again spotted off Santa Cruz Island and off the coast of San Diego.

"Since the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, big strides have been made in reducing pollutants in the Southern California Bight, especially from large wastewater outfalls, and these improvements may have allowed Felimare californiensis to regain a foothold in the region," said Goddard.

The current population status of F. californiensis in Southern California remains tenuous, but Goddard is encouraged by its persistence at Catalina in marine protected areas, including the popular, no-take Casino Point State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) and the recently established Blue Cavern SMCA.

He and the paper's co-authors, biology professor ngel Valds from Cal Poly Pomona; CSU Northridge student researcher Craig Hoover; and visiting colleague and sea slug expert Maria Schaefer plan to continue to monitor the population at Catalina, examine changes in genetic variation in the nudibranch since its decline, and study the distribution and abundance of its sponge prey.

Goddard is also collaborating with Mike Miller, webmaster of the popular Slug Site, on a video about the disappearance of F. californiensis for the 2013 San Diego Undersea Film Festival.

'That's 1 MILLION times bigger than 9 TRILLION!'

Welcome back to BracketRacket.

Think of it as one-stop shopping for all your NCAA tournament needs. We'll have interviews with celebrity alumni drawn from sports, entertainment and politics, plus "bracket-buster" picks, news, gossip, videos, photos, stats, notes and quotes from around the tourney sites ? all of it bundled into a quick read to give full-time fans and officer-poolers alike something to sound smart about during the day ahead. Look for it daily through the end of the tournament.

So without further ado ...

___

NO FUSS, NO MUSS, STILL PLENTY OF MAJERUS

Just like parenting, a big part of coaching is teaching kids to play well together, especially come tournament time. So even though the late Rick Majerus isn't in the frame, most of what you need to know about Saint Louis University's chances heading into the NCAAs can be found here: http://t.co/81ZIMICb4R .

It's a photo of the Billikens team watching the tournament selection show Sunday afternoon at a Best Buy in Secaucus, N.J.

And yes, that's the Atlantic 10 tournament trophy sitting at their feet, just to the left of the TV.

They won it a few hours earlier in Brooklyn, beating VCU to cap what's already been a whirlwind regular season, and were on their way to the airport when they ran into New York traffic. Some celebration that was turning out to be.

But without any fuss ? because that is the Saint Louis way ? the team bus pulled off the road and into the parking lot at Best Buy to find out where they were seeded (No. 4 in the Midwest) and who they were matched against (New Mexico State).

Soon after their arrival, store manager Jen Hart tweeted: "I brought them in the Magnolia room" ? who knew the rooms at Best Buy had names? ? "and the next thing I know there (are) 30 guys there."

Afterward, she sent this dispatch back to corporate headquarters in Minneapolis: "A couple of minutes later, they all started screaming. They thanked us 100 times, helped move the chairs back and got on the bus. Customers were asking what was going on. It was really cool. They were really nice guys."

Also absent from the photo ? but not from the celebration ? was Jim Crews, another coaching lifer and close pal whom Majerus enlisted to take over at Saint Louis as his own health started failing. Majerus, a giant of a man who died of heart failure in December at age 64, was the best dinner guest in America. He loved basketball and eating, and he was a genius at both. Heck, his autobiography is titled "My Life on a Napkin."

But Majerus was even better at teaching kids to seize every other opportunity life put in front of them, too. He grew up the son of a union stalwart from Milwaukee who dragged him along on open-housing marches, and his recruiting pitches were so honest that he always won over the parents, if not the kids. When Majerus was at Utah, Keith Van Horn's mother called and asked him to break the news to her son that Van Horn's father had a fatal heart attack. The coach took him to a 24-hour greasy spoon called Bill and Nada's in downtown Salt Lake City, where the two talked and pushed their eggs around the plate until Van Horn's flight home the next morning.

This Saint Louis team was recruited and nurtured by Majerus, and it's a tribute to Crews that they play the way Majerus so loved: sharing the ball on offense and zealously covering each other's backs on the other end of the floor. It didn't hurt of course, that Crews learned those same principles playing guard for Bobby Knight's undefeated national championship team in 1976, and employed them during 17 seasons coaching at Evansville and 7 more at Army.

He's such a good teacher, in fact, that even though the Billikens have won 15 of their last 16. and 11 of those by double digits ? another good omen come tournament time ? Crews has been careful to make sure they understand what's most important about Majerus' legacy.

"It would be great to say, 'Hey, this is for Rick. This is for Rick. This is for Rick,'" he explained. "But, you know, what if we lose? I just don't buy into that.

"Rick's life and friendship and his coaching and the relationships that he had and the people that he touched ? it's a lot bigger than winning a game or winning a championship or having a good year."

SHOW ME THE MONEY. THEN STACK ALL THOSE BRACKETS IN A NEAT PILE

Apparently, the dreaded sequester will not affect college basketball wagering.

Las Vegas-based sports-betting guru RJ Bell of Pregame.com said 100 million people around the world are expected to put $12 billion on the line beginning with Thursday's games ? "more action combined than the Super Bowl!" according to his release.

But those aren't the really staggering numbers.

It's 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 ? or if you insist on rounding off, 9.2 quintillion.

If we read Bell's release correctly ? no sure bet, so we called ? those are the odds that even one of those 100 million brackets would be perfect by tourney's end.

"That's ONE MILLION times bigger than 9 TRILLION!" Bell's release added helpfully.

Or, put another way: "If all the people on Earth filled out one bracket per second, it would take over 43 years to fill out every possible bracket."

And another: "If all possible brackets were stacked on top of each other (on standard paper), the pile would reach from the moon and back over 1.1 million times."

Of course, that's just for the 64-team bracket.

"If expanded to consider 68 teams," Bell added, "multiple the figures by 4."

Somebody get the man another espresso.

CELEBRITY ALUM OF THE DAY

When last we saw "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm, he had a full plate. Season five ended with his character, Don Draper, and the rest of the old-boy network at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce wrestling with issues like adultery and suicide. Turns out his time off from the series was almost as stressful.

"I've been around long enough to remember the Big Eight," the Missouri alum (Class of '93) told Associated Press television writer Lynn Elber. "Then, we're in the Big 12. And now we're in the SEC, which is really weird for me because this is our first season, and our football team just got destroyed.

"But a rising tide lifts all boats," he added, "and we will, hopefully, be challenged by our new conference."

"Mad Men" makes its debut this season April 7, the night before the NCAA championship game, and the shooting schedule has wreaked havoc on his regular sports-viewing habits. The Tigers open tournament play against Ole Miss on Friday at Nashville, but Hamm ? who played football, baseball and swam in high school ? concedes he hasn't been able to follow them as closely as he'd like.

"We're usually off by this time, so I usually get the whole March Madness-wash-over-me excitement. That has not been this season," he said. "Last year, we finished (taping) in February. This year, it will be April. So I missed the World Series last year, I missed the playoffs this year, I'll miss everything but the Stanley Cup playoffs."

Not that it will stop him from filling out a bracket.

"I usually do every year. Give somebody $10," Hamm chuckled, "and break the law."

___

DON'T BE A STRANGER

From the opening tip of the play-in games until the sound of "One Shining Moment" is blaring in the background as confetti falls on the newly crowned champion, we will be told over and over how each and every tournament game is freighted with emotion.

But if top-seeded Kansas and North Carolina both win their first games, and wind up colliding in the second round at Kansas City's Sprint Arena, well, you'll probably see Tar Heels coach Roy Williams fined for carrying excessive baggage.

Williams' ties to both schools are wrenching. He was born in in North Carolina, played briefly there, and worked under legendary coach Dean Smith as an assistant. Then he went to Kansas and made his reputation as one of the best in the game by winning almost everything in sight ? Williams still has more wins in Kansas City than any other active coach, including current Jayhawks coach, Bill Self ? except the national title. He had to go back to UNC to do that.

It's not that Williams didn't try at Kansas. He came achingly close to winning it all ? four Final Four appearances there between 1988-2003, including a runner-up finish in his final season. But as that gap in his resume widened to become a sinkhole, Williams masked his competitive streak behind a series of stunts he said were designed to change his luck.

Once, he stopped the team bus so he could spit in the Mississippi River on the way to a Final Four. Another time, he patted the gravestone of Dr. James Naismith, Kansas' first coach and the man credited with inventing basketball. Other times, he brought a stuffed monkey to meetings and told the players to feel free to knock it off his back. None of it worked.

Yet he has nothing but good memories about his stay there, occasionally turning up in the crowd to pull for the Jayhawks when they play somebody else. Wonder if he'll feel the same way if Kansas ? which beat his Tar Heels in the 2008 Final Four and again last March in the regional finals ? pull off the trifecta this time around.

___

STAT OF THE DAY

Hard to predict exactly what the season-long game of musical chairs at the top of the rankings presages for this year's tourney. Does it mean there's lots of very good teams, but no great ones?

STATS cautions against a rush to judgment. The four top seeds this time around? Louisville, Kansas, Indiana and Gonzaga ? have 18 losses between them. Only twice since the since the advent of seeding in 1979 has the top quartet piled up more: in 1990, when UConn, Michigan State, UNLV and Oklahoma combined for 19 losses; and in 2000, when Michigan State, Arizona, Duke and Stanford had 20.

But guess who took home those titles in both seasons a decade apart. Yep, No. 1 seeds UNLV and Michigan State, respectively.

It never hurts to be the king.

___

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"They didn't even tell me there was going to be a whole bunch of people here. They just told me there was going to be food. So I said, 'Sweet, food," Pittsburgh freshman center Steve Adams, who grew up in New Zealand and had no idea why his teammates and a few hundred Panthers fans were gathering to watch the tournament selection show .

Thousands jam St. Peter's for pope's last audience

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI greeted the Catholic masses in St. Peter's Square Wednesday for the last time before retiring, making several rounds of the square as crowds cheered wildly and stopping to kiss a half-dozen children brought up to him by his secretary.

Tens of thousands of people toting banners saying "Grazie!" ? "thank you" ? jammed the piazza to bid farewell to the pope at his final general audience ? the appointment he has kept each week to teach the world about the Catholic faith.

Pilgrims and curiosity-seekers picked spots along the main boulevard leading to the square to watch Wednesday's event on giant TV screens. Some 50,000 tickets were requested for Benedict's final master class, but Italian media estimated the number of people actually attending could be double that.

"It's difficult ? the emotion is so big," said Jan Marie, a 53-year-old Roman in his first years as a seminarian. "We came to support the pope's decision."

With chants of "Benedetto" erupting every so often, the mood was far more buoyant than during the pope's final Sunday blessing and recalled the jubilant turnouts that often accompanied him at World Youth Days and events involving his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

Benedict on Thursday will become the first pope in 600 years to resign, a decision he said he took after realizing that, at 85, he simply didn't have the strength of mind or body to carry on. He will meet Thursday morning with cardinals for a final time, then fly by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

There, at 8 p.m., the doors of the palazzo will close and the Swiss Guards in attendance will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church over ? for now.

Many of the cardinals who will choose Benedict's successor were in St. Peter's Square for his final audience, including retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, object of a grass-roots campaign in the U.S. to persuade him to recuse himself for having covered up for sexually abusive priests. Mahony has said he will vote.

Vatican officials say cardinals will begin meeting on Monday to decide when to set the date for the conclave to elect the next pope.

But the rank-and-file in the crowd on Wednesday weren't so concerned with the future; they wanted to savor the final moments with the pope they have known for eight years.

"I came to thank him for the testimony that he has given the church," said Maria Cristina Chiarini, a 52-year-old homemaker who traveled by train early Wednesday from Lugo, near Ravenna, with some 60 members of her parish. "There's nostalgia, human nostalgia, but also comfort, because as a Christian we have hope. The Lord won't leave us without a guide."

MC Hammer: 'Not bitter' about arrest in Calif.

DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) ? MC Hammer suggests he was a victim of racial profiling when he was stopped and arrested by police in the Northern California city of Dublin.

The '90s rap star tweeted on Saturday that an officer approached him in his car and asked "Are you on parole or probation?"

He says that as he handed over his ID, the officer reached inside the car and tried to pull him out.

Dublin police Lt. Herb Walters told the Oakland Tribune (http://bit.ly/YPesHt) that Hammer, who was born Stanley Burrell, was arrested Thursday for investigation of obstructing an officer in the performance of their duties and resisting an officer.

He declined to comment to KTVU about Hammer's version of the arrest.

Hammer tweeted that he wasn't bitter and considered what happened "a teachable moment."

Oakland Athletics Participate In A Baseball Game, Score Fewer Runs Than Opponent

Nobody really "loses" in Spring Training. Well, Scott Sizemore technically lost last spring, but that's different. What I'm saying is that the A's lost a baseball game today, but it doesn't matter because it's February 23rd.

Today was the beginning of a beautiful journey. At noon, the Oakland Athletics officially opened their Cactus League season. The 2013 season may not have actually started yet, but it feels a whole lot closer now. The A's played a game today!

There is bad news, though. I'm at kind of a loss as to how to recap this game. You see, the downside of Spring Training is that, since the games don't count or matter, nobody pays to broadcast them. This game wasn't on TV, so I couldn't watch it. It was broadcast on the radio, but my tiny 21st century attention span makes it really hard to focus on man I'm hungry, I'm going to go make a sandwich. Hey, are you watching the Oscars tomorrow?

Wait, what were we talking about again? Oh yeah, beer. I mean, the Brewers. And the A's. Playing baseball. Oh, that's right, I was recapping the game. Unfortunately, all I have to go on is the play-by-play, the snippets of radio broadcast which my stupid brain retained, and the comments on the Game Thread. Since the game itself doesn't really matter, I'm going to give a brief rundown of the play-by-play before moving on to individual comments about A's players and their accomplishments/failures.

The thing to remember about Spring Training is that it's all about getting ready for the games which actually count. It's not completely about winning or losing, but also easing into routines, building up arm strength, working on new pitches or batting stances, and getting or staying healthy. Spring Training stats and game results are most interesting when they relate to one or both of the following things: positional battles (in this case, middle infield and bullpen), and top prospects.

That being said, a game did occur today. Here is what happened. First off, Jesse Chavez started for Oakland. That should give you an idea of how seriously to take things at this point in the spring (winter?). In the first inning, he gave up a homer to Ryan Braun, because duh. In the 4th, reliever Justin Thomas walked a pair with one out; his replacement, Fernando Rodriguez, uncorked a wild pitch to move the runners up before allowing an RBI groundout to former Angels prospect Jean Segura. In the 7th, Oakland's Shane Peterson doubled to right off of something called a Santo Manzanillo, and top prospect Michael Choice singled sharply up the middle to score him. That was it. Oakland had 5 of the game's 8 hits, but Milwaukee won 2-1.

Let's have a look at the two interesting parts of Spring Training: positional battles, and top prospects.

All three of the leading second base candidates played today. Jemile Weeks started at 2nd, Grant Green replaced him in the 5th, and Scott Sizemore was the DH. Weeks had a very positive day, lining a double to right to lead off the game and making what was apparently a very impressive play on defense to start a 4-6-3 double play in the 2nd. He grounded out a couple of times, once into a double play, but at least he was hitting it on the ground and not flying out to medium-deep right-center. It's about all that you could hope to see from Weeks: slap hitting and a nice defensive play. (Edit: That is meant as a positive, as in "Weeks did both of the things which I was looking for him to do.")

Sizemore got three plate appearances. He struck out swinging in the 2nd against Mike Fiers, hit a ground-ball single in the 5th, and drew a walk in the 7th. Grant Green had one plate appearance, in which he worked a 3-0 count, thought he'd drawn the walk on 3-1, and then struck out on a foul tip; he also fielded a grounder on defense, drawing praise from Ray Fosse on Green's strong arm.

In his first taste of American baseball, Hiro Nakajima drew a walk in the 1st off of Fiers, but finished 0-for-2 with a strikeout.

There were several notable minor-leaguers in this game. Choice and Peterson made the biggest impacts with their 7th inning hits, but both also struck out in their second plate appearances. Michael Taylor struck out in his only plate appearance, and Luke Montz and Andy Parrino each went 0-for-2. Scott Moore looked impressive, however, drawing a walk in his only plate appearance and playing "a very slick first base," according to Susan Slusser. Moore is a guy who I'll be keeping a close eye on this spring as a potential backup infield option, so it was nice to hear that he got off to a good start.

On the pitching side, Oakland sent 6 men to the mound to cover 8 innings. They were:

Jesse Chavez: Still terrible. Move along.

Justin Thomas: Recorded 4 outs and issued 4 walks. Next.

Fernando Rodriguez: Failed to strand one of his inherited runners, but did end the inning with a strikeout.

Bruce Billings: Threw 2 sharp innings. Billings, acquired in 2011 for Mark Ellis, was impressive as a starter last year for Sacramento. His name doesn't come up a lot due to Oakland's depth of quality starters, but he could be a dark horse candidate to get some emergency starts in Oakland in 2013 (especially if Sonny Gray isn't ready to go when the bell rings).

Mike Ekstrom: Threw a 1-2-3 inning. I just can't shake the feeling that this guy is going to play a significant role in Oakland's bullpen at some point in 2013, just like Jim Miller and Evan Scribner did last year.

Arnold Leon: Issued a leadoff walk to a person named Scooter, which is just unacceptable. I'm assuming he was a child, based on his name. Arnold Leon should really be able to get out a child. He made up for it by inducing a double play and a flyout, but does that really make up for walking a little kid?

And there you have it. That is everything interesting that happened today. Wait, Brandon Moss got a hit. And Seth Smith drew a walk at one point. There, that's literally everything I can think of. What else do you want from me??

The first game is in the books, and it feels so good. Sure, Oakland technically lost the game, but it's irrelevant. A day went by and nobody got injured. That's a win in Oakland terms. And guess what? They play two tomorrow. Welcome back, baseball.

Super space germs could threaten astronauts

NASA

This image from a NASA space shuttle mission shows the International Space Station in orbit. The space station is the size of a football field and home to six astronauts.

By Charles Q. Choi
Space.com

The weightlessness of outer space can make germs even nastier, increasing the dangers astronauts face, researchers say.

These findings, as well as research to help reduce these risks, are part of the ongoing projects at the International Space Station?that use microgravity to reveal secrets about microbes.

"We seek to unveil novel cellular and molecular mechanisms related to infectious disease progression that cannot be observed here on Earth, and to translate our findings to novel strategies for treatment and prevention," said microbiologist Cheryl Nickerson at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute. Nickerson detailed these findings on Monday?at the annual meeting of the American Association for Advancement of Science in Boston.

In space, researchers encounter greatly reduced levels of gravity, often erroneously referred to as zero gravity. This near-weightlessness can have a number of abnormal effects on astronauts, such as causing muscle and bone loss.

Although microgravity can distort normal biology, conventional procedures for studying microbes on Earth can cause their own distortions.

Experiments on Earth often involve whirling cells around to keep them from settling downward in a clump due to gravity. However, the physical force generated by the movement of fluid over cell surfaces causes great changes to the way cells act. This property, known as fluid shear, influences a broad range of cell behaviors, and the shear that experiments on Earth introduce could twist results. [6 Coolest Space Shuttle Experiments]

In microgravity, researchers do not need to constantly disturb cells to keep them from clumping, as gravity is not pulling down on the cells to any significant degree. As such, experiments in microgravity can attain low fluid shear, and thus better reflect what normally happens with germs and cells inside bodies, Nickerson explained.

For example, the most common sites of human infection are the mucosal, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts, where fluid shear is typically low.

Salmonella in space
In an earlier series of NASA space shuttle and ground-based experiments, Nickerson and her colleagues discovered that spaceflight actually boosted the virulence,?or disease-causing potential, of the food-borne germ Salmonella.

"Does microgravity alter how Salmonella behaves? You bet it does, in a profound and novel way," Nickerson said.

This aggressive bacterium infects an estimated 94 million people globally and causes 155,000 deaths each year. In the United States alone, more than 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported annually, resulting in at least 500 deaths and health care costs in excess of $50 million, scientists said.

"By studying the effect of spaceflight on the disease-causing potential of major pathogens such as?Salmonella, we may be able to provide insight into infectious disease mechanisms that cannot be attained using traditional experimental approaches on Earth, where gravity can mask key cellular responses," Nickerson said.

These findings are of special concern for astronaut health?during extended spaceflight missions. Space travel already weakens astronaut immunity, and these findings reveal that astronauts may have to further deal with the threat of disease-causing microbes that have boosted infectious abilities.

Microgravity apparently causes many genes linked with Salmonella's virulence to switch on and off in ways not seen in Earth-based labs. The same appears to happen with bacterial genes linked to resistance against stress and to the formation of fortresslike structures known as biofilms. A better understanding of which genes spaceflight alters could help design therapies to fight or prevent infection, helping protect people both in space and on Earth.

"We need to outpace infectious disease because we're losing the fight to the pathogens," Nickerson told Space.com.

Better vaccines
Microgravity research could also help lead to novel vaccines. In a recent spaceflight experiment aboard space shuttle mission STS-135?(the last-ever shuttle flight), researchers brought along a genetically modified Salmonella-based vaccine designed to protect against pneumococcal pneumonia. Analysis of the effects of microgravity on the behavior of the vaccine could help reveal how to genetically modify it to improve it.

"Recognizing that the spaceflight environment imparts a unique signal capable of modifying Salmonella virulence, we will use this same principle in an effort to enhance the protective immune response of the recombinant, attenuated Salmonella vaccine strain," Nickerson said.

Experiments aboard the space station are now permitting microbial studies over prolonged time frames, ones not available during shuttle-based experiments. These studies in space are carried out in conjunction with simultaneous analyses on Earth using the same hardware as those in orbit, so researchers can compare the behavior of bacterial cells under normal Earth gravity. [Top 10 Mysterious Diseases]

In addition, researchers hope to simulate microgravity using machines such as rotating wall vessel bioreactors, which grow cells in ways that mimic how cells float in outer space. Such research helped confirm that a protein called Hfq plays a key role in the Salmonella response to spaceflight conditions. Still, these bioreactors can only replicate about 70 percent of the effects seen in spaceflight.

"Seventy percent is good, but we've missed 30 percent," Nickerson said.

Weightless nematodes
Nickerson was the first to study the effects of spaceflight on pathogen virulence and the first to profile the infection process in human cells in spaceflight. In her PHOENIX experiment, the capsule will mark the first time a whole, living organism will be infected with a germ, and simultaneously monitored in real time during the infection process under microgravity conditions. PHOENIX will fly on the SpaceX Dragon capsule traveling to the space station later this year, and will infect a nematode worm with Salmonella.

"Nematodes are wonderful for studying Salmonella. They're basically one long gastrointestinal tract from one end to the other," Nickerson said.

The significance of the results Nickerson and her colleagues have uncovered extends to more than just Salmonella. The researchers' experiments on the protein Hfq show that it apparently serves as a key regulator of gene responses to spaceflight conditions across a number of other bacterial species, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common hospital-acquired infection.

"It is exciting to me that our work to discover how to keep astronauts healthy during spaceflight may translate into novel ways to prevent infectious diseases here on Earth," Nickerson said.

Honey, It's Electric: Bees Sense Charge On Flowers

Flowers are nature's ad men. They'll do anything to attract the attention of the pollinators that help them reproduce. That means spending precious energy on bright pigments, enticing fragrances and dazzling patterns.

Now, scientists have found another element that contributes to flowers' brand: their distinct electric field.

Flowers taylor their displays toward the sensory capabilities of their pollinators. Bees can see visible and ultraviolet light, they have precise olfactory receptors, and now we know they can also detect electric fields.

Electric field (artist's depiction). Flowers have a weak negative electric charge relative to the air around them. Different flowers have different electric fields, often with charge concentrated at the tips of the petals.

Adam Cole/NPR

Anne Leonard, who studies bees at the University of Nevada, says our understanding of pollinator-flower communication has been expanding for decades.

"Flowers do a lot of things you might not expect," Leonard says. "We observe they have these distinct bright, beautiful colors, patterns, scents."

But we don't often stop to consider that this incredible display is all an attempt to attract bees and other pollinators. These displays don't just consist of things humans notice. There are also patterns in the ultraviolet spectrum, petal temperatures and textures and shapes.

"We've found that by producing these combinations of sensory stimuli, the plant basically makes its flowers easier for the bee to learn and remember," Leonard says.

That means the bee can forage more efficiently, and flowers are more likely to be pollinated.

"This is a magnificent interaction where you have an animal and a plant, and they both want this to go as well as possible," says Gregory Sutton of the University of Bristol in the U.K. "The flowers are trying to make themselves look as different as possible. This is to establish the flower's brand."

Sutton and a team of researchers led by Daniel Robert have just uncovered a whole new layer to flower brands.

"We found that flowers can use electric fields," Sutton says.

That's right ? electric fields. It turns out flowers have a slight negative charge relative to the air around them. Bumblebees have a charge, too.

"When bees are flying through the air, just the friction of the air and the friction of the body parts on one another causes the bee to become positively charged," Sutton says.

It's like shuffling across a carpet in wool socks. When a positively charged bee lands on a flower, the negatively charged pollen grains naturally stick to it. The Bristol team wondered if bees were aware of this electrostatic interaction.

So, they designed an experiment ? one described in this week's Science magazine. The researchers built a small arena full of fake flowers. Each flower was simple ? a stalk with a small steel dish at the top. Half of the "flowers" held delicious sugar water. The other half held quinine, a substance that bees find bitter and disgusting.

When bumblebees explored this false flower patch, they moved around randomly. They chose to land on sweet flowers just about as often as bitter flowers.

But when the sweet flowers carried a small charge, the bees learned pretty quickly to choose the charged flowers. And when the electric charge was removed? They went back to their random foraging.

The bees had recognized the electric field, and had learned to use it to find sweet flowers. But that's not all.

"In the seconds just before the bee lands, there is electrical activity in the plant," Sutton says.

The plant's electric field is changed by the proximity of that positively charged bee. And once the bee leaves, the field stays changed for 100 seconds or so. That's long enough for the altered field to serve as a warning for the next bee that buzzes by. She won't stop to investigate a flower that's already been visited.

Pertino

Services and applications continually move to the cloud; so why not networking? Pertino allows you to create an on-the-fly network in the cloud. You can add to your network devices you use everyday such as file servers, computers, printers, and fax machines. Then invite others users to connect to the network and share these devices no matter where you, the devices or invited users are located. Pertino is an example of the emerging Networking-as-a-Service (NaaS) trend, and it's targeted at the smaller end of the small and mid-sized business market. Pertino's sweet spot is that it could eliminate the need for SMBs to invest in traditional networking hardware or hire someone to manage a network.

Innovative and easy-to-use for non-networking gurus, Pertino?currently available in Limited Release? has a lot of promising benefits for the SMB and is an exciting development in Networking-as-a-Service, However,? this still nascent solution needs some feature enhancements and is best suited for those with lighter networking needs.

What It Does
Once your Pertino network is created, you can add servers and computers to your network and invite others on the network. Those other users can also add their own devices. Such a network, allows all individuals to share files off of each other's devices and also remote desktop to machines within the created network.

What's great about adding devices is that they do not have to be physical devices. I was easily able to add a Hyper-V virtual machine to my network. For those who have cloud servers created in hosted platforms like Rackspace, 8x8, or Amazon EC2, those server instances can be added to a Pertino network, as well.

For security, the service uses 256-bit encryption for data protection. Pertino's file and desktop sharing is integrated tightly with the Windows operating system, so you are using the local folder permissions in Windows. You can only access files in remote device's folders that are shared in Windows and you must have network discovery enabled on all machines. Remote Desktop also has to be enabled on every machine you want to remotely access. For sharing files and remotely connecting, a user has to have the local Windows login credentials to the machine he or she wants to access files from or remote desktop into.

For ease-of-use, Pertino's service leverages Windows' inherent functionality: customers use Windows' Remote Desktop Service for remote access and use Windows Explorer to access folder shares. If you are familiar with Windows tasks such as enabling remote desktop sessions, or setting up folder shares, you will have no problem with configuring Windows properly to work within your Pertino network. Mac users and others not as familiar with Windows settings may be a bit confused by what is required to configure within the Windows operating system. Luckily, Pertino's website features videos that walk you through the needed steps to share files and use remote desktop.

Subscribing and Pricing
Pertino's subscription model begins with a free Personal plan that allows customers to build a cloud network with up to three members with three devices each. This level of subscription is not only targeted to small businesses, but a family for example, could build a network for sharing photos and files or remotely troubleshooting another family member's machine.

From there, pricing is $10 per month, per user as networking needs increase.

Genting Q4 core earnings fall 6 pct, better than forecast

SINGAPORE, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Genting Singapore PLC

, a casino operator that runs Resorts World Sentosa in

the affluent city-state, reported a 6 percent fall in

fourth-quarter profit but the result still came above estimates.

"Comparing to the fourth quarter of 2011, the business

volume in the premium players segment improved significantly by

56 percent. However, this was offset by weaker win percentage in

the premium players business," it said in a statement on

Thursday.

Margins will remain under pressure in the first half of this

year, Genting Singapore said.

The gaming and resort operator is burdened by a slowing

market and tighter local regulations as the novelty aspect of

Singapore's two multibillion-dollar casino complexes wears off.

Its October-December core earnings or adjusted earnings

before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA)

fell to S$369 million ($298 million) from S$394 million a year

earlier.

This was above the average estimate of S$332 million,

according to five analysts surveyed by Reuters.

Strong performances at rival Las Vegas Sands Corp's

Singapore and Chinese properties had raised market expectations

the worst might be over for Genting Singapore.

Genting Singapore's shares have been the best performers

over the past three months, jumping 24 percent versus a 5

percent rise in the broader benchmark index. The shares

underperformed last year.

(AP) ? Residents in this swath of sprawling Chicago neighborhoods and suburbs have brimmed with loyalty to Jesse Jackson Jr. over the past 17 years, giving him an enthusiastic majority each election ? even after questionable links to ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, reports of an extramarital affair and a bizarre five-month medical leave.

But the former congressman's guilty plea to charges that he lived off and lavishly spent campaign money for personal use ? on everything from toilet paper to mink capes ? has turned the tide. In territory where it was difficult to scrape up any criticism of Jackson, his Chicago alderman wife or his famous civil rights leader father, the mood is now simply one of disappointment.

"He knew better; it was a very stupid thing to do," said 75-year-old Jeannette Reese, shaking her head as she grocery-shopped at a busy shopping complex. "He and his father came to our church. I thought he was the real thing."

Reese said she had voted for the younger Jackson for years.

Jackson, who resigned from office in November, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Washington to criminal charges that he engaged in a scheme to spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items. He faces up to 57 months ? more than four years ? in prison and a fine, under a plea deal with prosecutors.

It was an emotional day for Jackson, 47, who held back tears as he addressed the federal judge, just hours before his wife pleaded guilty to filing false joint federal income tax returns that knowingly understated the income the couple received. She faces up to two years in prison and a fine.

"I did these things," Jackson told the judge, adding later, "Sir, for years I lived in my campaign."

Jackson first won office in a 1995 special election and developed widespread support from mayors who said he delivered and constituents who valued his family legacy and said he gave them a voice. That support persevered even through an intense primary challenge last year from former one-term U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson who made Jackson's ethical troubles central to her campaign. He came away with the easy majority even as he remained under a House Ethics Committee investigation for ties to Blagojevich, who's serving a federal prison sentence on allegations that he tried to profit from President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate Seat.

Even the most loyal Jackson supporters who praised him for bringing home nearly $1 billion in federal funding to the district were rattled.

"I hate that circumstances ended up like they did," said Ford Heights Mayor Charles Griffin. His small community south of Chicago ? one of Illinois' poorest ? got a boost in its water system because of Jackson.

Still, Griffin did not want to pile on criticism. "His situation is between the court system and the family," the mayor said.

Next week, voters in the heavily Democratic district head to the polls in a special primary to replace him. The crowded field of candidates includes Halvorson, former state Rep. Robin Kelly and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale.

Jackson is scheduled to be sentenced June 28 and his wife on July 1. Both Jacksons, who maintain homes in Washington and Chicago, are free until sentencing.

More details emerged in a 22-page statement compiled by prosecutors and filed Wednesday. In it, Jackson admitted that he and his wife used campaign credit cards to buy thousands of personal items worth $582,772.58 from 2005 through April of last year. The most lavish purchases included the spending of more than $43,000 on a gold-plated men's Rolex watch.

Court papers said more than $60,000 was shelled out for restaurant, nightclub and lounge outings. Money was also spent on a washer, a dryer, a range and a refrigerator for the Jacksons' Chicago home.

Jackson even arranged for the use of campaign money to buy two mounted elk heads for his congressional office, according to court documents.

Jackson entered the courtroom Wednesday holding hands with his wife and looking a bit dazzled as he surveyed the packed room. He kissed his wife and headed to the defense table.

After the hearing he shouted to a reporter: "Tell everybody back home I'm sorry I let them down, OK?"

The Chicago Democrat disappeared from the public eye last June for a medical leave, though details on his condition and location were always scarce. Doctors later said he suffers from bipolar disorder and was hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

His attorney said after the court appearance that Jackson's health is "not an excuse" for his actions, "just a fact." Jackson's father has said that his son remains under strict medical supervision.

One attorney, Reid Weingarten, told reporters after the hearing that there's reason for optimism.

"A man that talented, a man that devoted to public service, a man who's done so much for so many, has another day," he said. "There will be another chapter in Jesse Jackson's life."
