iFixIt tears down the 5th gen iPod touch

Apple's new fifth generation iPod touch is just starting to hit consumer's hands and iFixIt has already managed to tear it down. While the iPhone 5 was given a 7 out of 10 repairability score from iFixIt, Apple's newest generation iPod touch only achieved a 3 out of 10.

Much like its predecessors, the fifth generation iPod touch isn't the easiest device to repair, mostly attributed to its thin design.

With no external screws, the Touch is tough to pry open, and its logic board utilizes two hard-to-manage ribbon cables: the battery, logic board, front camera, speaker, headphone jack, Lightning connector, and home button switch are all soldered onto one cable, while the volume buttons, power button, LED flash, and rear microphone are all attached to another cable. Repair is not impossible, but it's certainly going to be difficult and expensive if one component breaks. These factors combined earned the iPod a 3 out of 10 on our repairability scale (10 is easiest to repair).

In the past, the trend was typically that the thinner a device got, the harder it got to repair. The iPhone 5 proved that theory wrong and actually ends up being extremely easy to repair. We've already shown you how to replace a cracked screen on an iPhone 5 and we believe many users with moderate DIY skills will be able to do it on their own with no problems.

Since Apple has chosen to link many functions to single cables, it can make a hand slip or a torn cable a lot more expensive this time around. While previous generation iPhones and iPods have put functions like the proximity sensor and noise canceling mic on the same cable, they were relatively cheap and inexpensive. Components such as the dock connector, Home button, flash, and speaker had their own assemblies making repairs easier and more cost effective even if you did make a mistake.

This probably won't be the case with the fifth generation iPod touch. While we aren't sure what component cost will be for these guys yet, I'd be willing to bet it's going to be higher than components on previous models. While a repair isn't impossible, it'll definitely cost you more time and money than before.

Outside of repairability, iFixIt also has some details on the specs of the new iPod touch:

While it may not have received the same A6 treatment as the new iPhone 5, it's still a worthy upgrade for anyone using a second or third generation iPod touch. If you've got a fourth generation iPod touch, it may not be a huge upgrade unless, of course, you've got your eye set on a specific color and really desire the extra screen real estate.

US, French physicists win Nobel for quantum work

NEW YORK (AP) ? A Frenchman and an American shared the Nobel Prize in physics Tuesday for inventing methods to peer into the bizarre quantum world of ultra-tiny particles, work that could help in creating a new generation of super-fast computers.

Serge Haroche of France and American David Wineland opened the door to new experiments in quantum physics in the 1990s by showing how to observe individual atoms and particles of light called photons while preserving their quantum properties.

Quantum physics, a field about a century old, explains a lot about nature but includes some weird-sounding behavior by individual, isolated particles. A particle resists our idea of either-or: it's not here or there, it's sort of both. It's not spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise, but a bit of both. It gets a definite location or spin only when it's measured.

Working separately, the two scientists, both 68, developed "ingenious laboratory methods" that allowed them to manage and measure and control fragile quantum states, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

Wineland traps ions ? electrically charged atoms ? and measures them with light, while Haroche controls and measures photons.

"Their ground-breaking methods have enabled this field of research to take the very first steps towards building a new type of superfast computer based on quantum physics," the academy said. "The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time."

Haroche is a professor at the College de France and Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. Wineland is a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, and the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Haroche said he was out walking with his wife in Paris when he got the call from the Nobel judges.

"I was in the street and passing a bench so I was able to sit down," Haroche told a news conference in Stockholm by telephone. "It's very overwhelming."

He said his work in the realm of quantum physics could ultimately lead to unimaginably fast computers. "You can do things which are prohibited by the laws of classical physics," he told The Associated Press.

Haroche also said quantum research could help make GPS navigating systems more accurate.

Wineland told the AP he was sleeping when his wife answered the phone at 3:30 a.m. local time in Denver. He was utterly shocked even though his name had come up before.

"But actually I hadn't heard anything this time around. It was certainly surprising and kind of overwhelming right now," he said. "I feel like I got a lot smarter overnight."

Asked how he will celebrate, Wineland said: "I'll probably be pretty worn out by this evening. I'll probably have a glass of wine and fall asleep."

Wineland took pains to note that many people are working in the field. "First of all, a lot of people have been working on advanced computers and atomic clocks for a long time. It's a bit embarrassing to focus on just two individuals," he said.

Wineland told reporters that he thinks that in the next decade or so, quantum computers will cross a threshold and be able to handle problems that are intractable on today's computers.

"At this point I wouldn't recommend anybody buy stock in a quantum computing company ... but we're optimistic," he said.

The Nobel judges said quantum computers could radically change people's lives in the way that classical computers did last century, but a full-scale quantum computer is still decades away.

"The calculations would be incredibly much faster and exact and you would be able to use it for areas like ... measuring the climate of the earth," said Lars Bergstrom, the secretary of the prize committee.

Christopher Monroe, who does similar work at the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland, said the awarding of the prize to the two men "is not a big surprise to me. ... It was sort of obvious that they were a package."

Monroe said that thanks to the bizarre properties of the quantum world, when he and Wineland worked together in the 1990s, they were able to put a single atom in two places simultaneously.

At that time, it wasn't clear that trapping single atoms could help pave the way to superfast quantum computers, he said. That whole field "just fell into our laps."

In an ordinary computer, information is represented in bits, each of which is either a zero or a one. But in a quantum computer, an individual particle can essentially represent a zero and a one at the same time. If scientists can make such particles work together, certain kinds of calculations could be done with blazing speed.

One example is factoring, the process of discovering what numbers can be multiplied together to produce a given number. That has implications for breaking codes, Monroe said.

The physics prize was the second of the 2012 Nobel Prizes to be announced, with the medicine award going Monday to stem cell pioneers John Gurdon of Britain and Japan's Shinya Yamanaka. Each award is worth 8 million kronor, or about $1.2 million.

Only two women have won the physics prize since it was first awarded in 1901: Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963.

The prizes are always handed out on Dec. 10, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel's death in 1896.

All I Really Need To Know I Learned Playing Board Games | Charles ...

Once upon a time, before technology took charge of our lives, children played board games.

Full disclosure here: I am an aging but full-fledged computer geek; an iPhone carrying member of the Baby Boomer generation. My husband?s greatest rival for my attention fits in my hand, my children and pets don?t sit on my lap because my laptop usually gets there first, and these days I spend more time playing Words With Friends than I do rolling the dice on a backgammon board.

But board games ? good board games ? have tremendous value for children. And while there are some true beauts on the digital front, not a one holds a candle to a tangible game of Froggie Boogie, Secret Door or The Big Fat Tomato Game between real human beings who are close enough to touch each other (or throw the dice at each other) during play.

Crazy Eights, Go Fish, Checkers, Clue, Monopoly; back in?my?day, all self-respecting five-year olds could hold their own with a deck of cards, a pair of dice, and a watchful eye for a cheating older brother or sister. If we were lucky, parents occasionally played with us, providing us with role models for game manners, and challenging us to new levels of play. Who among us didn?t want to beat a parent, fair and square? ?(Of course, our parents didn?t?always?have good game manners. I still remember the 1974 Christmas Eve Parcheesi fiasco, when my parents went to bed no longer on speaking terms. ?And my mother has never forgiven my ex-husband for playing ?pinney? in Scrabble one summer vacation ? ?that?s?not a real word!? -?though it has been at least fifteen years.)

I love the idea of Friday family game night, though we are often so tired after a hard week that it is difficult to summon the requisite energy and enthusiasm. What gets lost when we don?t play, unfortunately, could fill a book on educating children. ?I cannot think of a single aspect of child development; social growth, executive function, academic skill, or a curriculum area that is not addressed in some way by the right board game. Try me, please.

In Kindergarten at CRS, teachers Kristin Jayne and Lisa Larcenaire have always made games part of their curriculum. Lisa underscores how many important concepts and skills are addressed during games, adding, ?(children) ? take turns, face frustration and disappointment, ask questions to clarify, reassess options in the face of new information, compromise, explain their thinking, reach consensus ?and strategize. Kindergartners often connect with a particular game, ?and may take responsibility for teaching it to classmates and family. When they do, they share in the enjoyment of the participants and feel powerful in their role in making it happen.?

Last year, inspired by their example and the increasing number of really good quality board games on the market for younger children, Vanita and I began to develop a year-long Puzzles and Games curriculum for PreKindergarten. A number of companies (my personal favorites are Gamewright, BlueOrange, Family Pastimes and Ravensburger), put out quality games that are visually and tactilely appealing as well as thought-provoking. With these games, we practice cooperation and self-control, solve conflicts, take turns, and learn to win and lose with grace. We invite friends to play, ask to join in games, and learn to stay with something until it is over. ?We learn that ?fair? is a complicated word that depends upon your point of view, and that reaching compromise is a lifelong task.

Good games provoke imagination, creative thought, logic building, and help hone memory skills. Many also challenge children to use mathematical thinking, visualize shapes and colors, or practice reading skills. Others still encourage verbal creativity, or expose us to ideas and artifacts from another place or time. Don?t underestimate future benefits from this exposure, either. My brother and I loved to play a board game called Masterpiece as children and ?over forty years later, we can both still identify each and every work of art in the game.

One of the most important benefits of consistent and regular game playing for children is the manner in which it so beautifully demonstrates the process of developmentally appropriate learning within a differentiated context. Think of the game Qwirkle, for example, where players try to match tiles according to color and shape. Children can begin to play this game at its most basic level as soon as they are comfortable identifying and distinguishing between the colors and shapes in the game (there are six of each). Each subsequent game gives a child a chance to practice and hone the skills they have developed, and to begin to make inferences and explore new strategies. The more a child plays, the more he learns, but the concepts are never frustratingly out of reach because the child ?constructs? his learning at his own pace.

One valuable lesson I?ve learned while playing games with children is to refrain from ?teaching? them strategy. Vanita and I make observations, ask occasional questions, referee when necessary, and model strategies with our own play. We want our students to enjoy the many challenges inherent in a variety of games, not become eight year-old chess masters. Their grasp of strategy will be much more solid and satisfying in the long run if it is self-directed.?To quote CRS first grader Mackenzie, explaining why City Square Off is her favorite game, ?I like it because I have to plan and think ahead about what I?m going to do.? Her mom, Annie, concurs, ??We have to think and negotiate our choices on that one. The funny thing is she usually beats me. I love it because we talk and change the rules together.?


What are the hardest things for a fledgling game player to learn? In PreK, the toughest lessons at first seem to be waiting for a turn, sticking with a game until it?s over, and putting it away properly when they?re finished.

Oh, and learning to roll dice so that they land within fifteen feet of the board.?;-)

Annabel M. Enicks, age 88, of Greenville, Ohio, passed on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 3:39 PM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. She was born on July 21, 1924 in Darke County, Ohio, to the late Walter & Clara (McKibben) Davenport.

She is survived by her children, Gerald ?Jerry? & Diana Enicks of Greenville, Judith & Gary Voke of Greenville, and Ronald Enicks of Celina, Ohio; grandchildren, Barbara (Eugene) Shuret, Lonnie (Susan) Voke, Brenda (Jeff) Hines, Tamy (Vince) Metzcar, Darrin (Heather) Voke, Desi Hardwick, Becky (Michael) Smith, Wade (Linda) Enicks, Tabitha Enicks, and Tiffany Enicks; 22 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren; sister, Dorotha Eliker of Greenville; sisters in law, Dorothy Heiser of Greenville and Emma Enicks of Greenville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Enicks whom she married on October 19, 1942; and sister, Helen Davenport.

Annabel was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church and Greenville Area Dog Club. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting.

There will be a service held on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio, with Pastor Joe Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery, Greenville, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 from 4-7 PM at the funeral home.

It is the wishes of the family that memorial contributions be given to State of the Heart Hospice or Brethren Retirement Community Resident Aid Fund.
