Emir of Qatar visits Gaza, pledges $400 million

The Emir of Qatar has become the first head of state to visit Gaza since the Islamist group Hamas seized control five years ago. The visit reflects increasing ties between the Gulf state and the regime which is considered a terrorist group by the West.? Lindsey Hilsum Channel Four Europe reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated 4:10 p.m. ET -- DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The emir of Qatar embraced the Hamas leadership of Gaza on Tuesday with an official visit that broke the isolation of the Palestinian Islamist movement, to the dismay of Israel and rival, Western-backed Palestinian leaders.

Israel said it was "astounding" that Qatar, a U.S.-allied Gulf state whose oil and gas permit it to punch way above its diplomatic weight, would take sides in the Palestinian dispute and endorse Hamas, branded as terrorists in the West. The emir had "thrown peace under the bus," an Israeli spokesman said.

But some analysts saw a daring move, aimed at rehabilitating Hamas in Western eyes in order to coax it into the peace camp at a time of Arab Spring revolts and civil war in Syria, have been reshaping power balances across the Middle East.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh welcomes the Emir of Qatar Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, right, to Gaza at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt on Oct. 23.

The emir, who is rare among Arab rulers in having met senior Israeli officials, denounced Israel's policies and praised people in Gaza for standing up to it with "bare chests" -- but he also urged rival Palestinian leaders to abandon their feuds.

The emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa?al-Thani, who has led Arab efforts to support rebels in Syria and Libya during Arab Spring revolts, left Doha with a large delegation and was welcomed with a red carpet. Among those traveling with him were?his wife, Sheikh Moza, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassim and other ministers, the official Qatar News Agency reported.?

Hundreds of Palestinians lined his route, waving Palestinian and Qatari flags as the emir's black Mercedes limousine bumped along the rutted main highway Qatar has promised to rebuild.

"Today we declare victory over the blockade through this historic visit," Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh told the Qatari monarch in a speech at the site of a new town to be built with the emirate's money. "Thank you emir, thank you Qatar, for this noble Arab stance. ... Hail to the blood of martyrs that brought us to this moment."

Hamas, whose suicide bombing campaign against Israel was at a peak a decade ago, rejects a peace treaty and has poured scorn on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, of the rival Fatah movement, for his efforts to negotiate his way to a Palestinian state. That peace process with Israel is stalled.

Qatar's first lady, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al-Missned, left, walks alongside the wife of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, during a welcome ceremony at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

Sheikh Hamad slammed Israeli settlement in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. "The Palestinian cause ... remains a bleeding wound in the Arab body as Israel continues every day to change the face of Palestinian land through its settlement activities and Judaisation in the occupied West Bank and especially in Jerusalem," he told an audience at Gaza's Islamic University.

But he blamed some of the failure on Palestinian infighting, which had undermined "resistance." "Surely you realize that your division is the source of greater harm to your cause and the cause of all Arabs," he said. "It is time you end the chapter of differences and open a wide chapter for reconciliation."

"This visit has great political significance," said Hamas government spokesman Taher al-Nunu, according to AlJazeera.com. "[The emir] is the first Arab leader to break the political siege."

Gaza, under partial blockade by Israel and Egypt, has no airport or seaport, and the Qatari delegation is believed to have entered by land from Egypt.

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi said he welcomed the emir's visit to Gaza, according to a late night statement from his office quoted by AlJazeera.com.

US, Israel ready for huge joint drill in Iran's shadow

This was the first visit to Gaza by any national leader since Hamas seized control of the enclave where 1.7 million people live from Abbas's forces in 2007. Israel had pulled out its troops and settlers from the territory two years earlier.

Qatar has called the visit a humanitarian gesture, to inaugurate reconstruction projects financed by the emirate. After initially earmarking $250 million for the schemes, a smiling Haniyeh announced the fund now stood at $400 million.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the United States was concerned about the "destabilizing" role of Hamas in the region.

"The Qataris have described this as a humanitarian mission," she said. "We would hope that the opportunity was taken to make clear the importance of Palestinians and Israelis talking to each other."

Hamas security forces sit between posters of senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, left, and Qatar's Emir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who is set to visit the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. He will be the first head of state to enter the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The visit will not include a meeting with Abbas, whose authority extends over the West Bank. The emir notified Abbas of his visit in a phone call on Sunday, according to the Jerusalem Post.

?We can?t welcome the visit of the emir and his wife to the Gaza Strip,? political analyst Adel Abdel Rahman, who is affiliated with Fatah, told the paper.??The visit does not serve the unity of the Palestinian territories, the people and the political system. On the contrary, the visit poses a threat to unity and our political system.?

Western-allied Gulf Arab states are trying to lure Hamas away from its alliance with Iran, whose nuclear energy program has raised the prospect of a war with Israel.?

Israeli forces strike Gaza targets after rocket salvo

Israel and Gaza are in a state of perpetual low-level conflict, marked by sporadic rocket attacks from Gaza by Islamic militant groups and air strikes by the Israeli forces.

Imperfect beings (three males needed)

roleplay/imperfect-beings/#ooc
Werewolves are not monsters from fairytales. Most lead normal lives. They can go to school, get a job, raise a family just like any other human. But there's a catch. If they don't shift frequently, they become ravenous when the full moon is out. The wolf in them comes out, more hungry and cruel then ever. ?
They wolf gene is passed down from parents- even if just one parent is a werewolf, their child will have the same fate as them. Wolves abandoning their pack and having a child with a human is very, very rare. They are usually born into a pack. Werewolves can tell if another person is a werewolf or human, even before their first change. They usually change for the first time when they are about thirteen. Packs often have scouts that find packless werewolves that don't know who they are, and befriend them so when their first change comes, they take them to the pack and they are adopted in.?

But werewolves can also be bitten. If a human is bitten by a werewolf, they will change immediately. The first change is very long and very painful, for Changlings and natural-born werewolves. It can take anywhere from four to ten hours. If another werewolf doesn't help them through their first change, they will likely die. When a werewolf bites a human and helps them through their first change, they are bound together. They can sense each others feelings, and speak to each other telepathically. Once a werewolf bites a human, they are completely responsible for the confused and overwhelmed Changling. They have a hard time controlling changing back and forth between human and wolf, and the world is now so bright it hurts their eyes, and every noise hurts their ears. Werewolves often take their Changling away from the rest of the pack until they have fully adjusted, which can take anywhere from weeks to months.?

If a human is to bear a werewolf child, it is almost guaranteed that she will not survive the pregnancy, and she definitely will not survive the birth of her child. Human skin and systems are simply too weak. This is mainly what discourages solves from having children with humans.?
There is one way for a wolf to possibly save their mate, though. If a human is bitten while they are pregnant, their chances of survival are higher. They do not shift until after their pup is born, but they still have the strength of a werewolf.?
There's a catch. It has to be the father of her child who bites her. Is another wolf bites her, there will be no difference. But if the father of her child bites her, her eyes will flash a very wolfish yellow, just for a moment and she will quickly go from weak and fragile looking to strong and healthy.

Meet the Pack

The Brighton Pack lives deep in a forest, with a large pack house. The alpha is in bad shape, after an attack from a rival pack. His own brother's pack. See, in this pack if there are two or three brothers, they fight to see who is the strongest. The winner becomes the alpha. The current alpha and his brother were never close- constantly fighting. Not brotherly scuffles, they were going for blood even we they were young.?
The current alpha won, and his brother stormed off. He bit humans, creating his own pack. He set out to have revenge on his brother.

After a particularly brutal attack, the alpha is very badly injured. He is not expected to recover. The alpha was the only one injured, but the entire pack is now very edgy and worried about what The rival pack might do next. Especially given the fact that some of the young pack members have gotten themselves involved with humans.

Characters

The wolves

Image
They are twins. One of them will most likely be the next alpha. They are nothing like their father and his brother. They are very close, constantly teasing each other and play fighting with each other. If either one wins, the other will happily back down and support him. They are both 19.?

Oliver Brighton?
Image
Stubborn. He is the sensible one. Well, most of the time. When he wants something, he will throw himself entirely into it. He has amazing dedication, but doesn't back down easily. He is very intelligent, and usually is very gentle but can be very forceful. ?
FC: Finn Harries (reserved)

James Brighton?
Image
Careless. He seems not to have a care in the world. He isn't very serious, and loves to have fun and prank his siblings.??He has a a bright, cheerful soul that is very hard to hamper. When it comes to his pack and things he really cares about, he can be very serious though.?
FC: Jack Harries?OPEN

Image
Image
These two are Oliver and James's younger siblings. They are rather close, and somewhat protective of each other. They fight often, but overall love each other.

Annabel Brighton?
Image
Vain. Anna has a terrible habit of being all about appearances. She hates being ignored, and can be somewhat demanding. Deep down, she is just afraid of being forgotten. She is fiercely protective of her family, and hates 'intruders'.
FC: Clair Holt (reserved)

Nathaniel Brighton?
Image
Player. He hates staying in one place, or with one girl. He can come off a little cold, and is an expert at keeping his emotions hidden. He is really just afraid of falling in love. Surprisingly, he is actually quite affectionate. He's 17.
FC: Caspar Lee OPEN

The humans

Eleanor Whiteraven?
Image
Hardheaded. Ella can't stand being pushed around, or forced into things. She has learned to be very independent, and get along just fine on her own. She is very free spirited, and it's difficult to get umber her skin. But once you do, she is the most caring and loyal girl you could know. -TAKEN-

Logan Nox?
Image
Pushover. Logan is a big softie. He has a hard time telling people no. He is very shy and kindhearted, yet protective of the ones he loves.
FC: Josh Devine OPEN

Caroline Thorn
Image
Bitter. Caroline often is quite coldhearted and uncaring. She doesn't trust people easily at all, and has a terrible habit of using people then leaving them like they are nothing. Deep down, she's really so terrified of being hurt.
FC: Candice Accola (reserved)

Relationships
Now this is where it gets. . . . complicated.?

Oliver, James, and Eleanor
Awkward. At at party they got quite drunk. Both of the boys took a liking to Ella. What happened. . . They were too drunk too remember. Eleanor moved on, thinking nothing of it until she found out she was pregnant. The worst. . . She didn't know which one the father was. The pack took her in, and the Alpha female (the twins' mother) cared for her. She is due within a week and hasn't allowed either of the twins to bite her.

Annabel and Logan
Annabel had always had a soft spot for the human. ?When thought she saw him looking at another girl, jealousy overtook her. In the heat of the moment, she bit him and brought him back to the pack house. Slowly, Logan begins to grow to care for her. (when the rp starts he's just been bitten)

Nathaniel and Caroline
At the same party that his brothers found Eleanor, Nathaniel found Caroline. He got caught up in her beauty but instead of getting her pregnant, he bit her. He quickly realized what a mistake he had made- this complete stranger was completely his responsibility. And she was not going down quietly.?The Alpha Female helps her, aswell, but overall it is his responsibility.

But, of corse, the rival pack is not going to just let them have a happy ending. The more pain they can cause, the better.

Gadhafi's former spokesman arrested, Libya says

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? The Libyan government on Saturday announced the capture of Moammar Gadhafi's ex-spokesman outside a besieged town, as the oil-rich North African nation marked the anniversary of the ousted dictator's death.

The statement by the prime minister's office said Moussa Ibrahim, who became the international face of the regime in its final months, was captured as he was trying to flee Bani Walid. The town has been the site of fierce fighting between pro-government forces and fighters holed up in what was once a stronghold for Gadhafi supporters.

"He is now being transported to Tripoli so that the investigation by relevant authorities can begin," the statement from the prime minister's office said.

The statement did not say what charges Ibrahim would face, but Libyan officials in the past have suggested he might be accused of incitement and disseminating false information.

A Facebook page purporting to belong to Ibrahim denied the capture, saying it was an effort to divert attention away from the "atrocities" being committed by the Libyan forces besieging Bani Walid. The site and statement could not be independently confirmed, but hours after the announcement of his capture, Ibrahim had not been seen in public.

Violence has flared periodically over the last year in Bani Walid, the most significant town in Libya still resisting the country's new authorities since the end of the country's civil war last year.

The urbane, English-speaking Ibrahim was the most well-known former regime figure to remain unaccounted for after Gadhafi was captured and killed by rebels as his hometown of Sirte was falling on Oct. 20, 2011, following an eight-month civil war.

Gadhafi's son and heir-apparent Seif al-Islam was captured by former rebels late last year. The regime's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi fled the country but was later captured in Mauritania and extradited to Libya. The two men had been charged by the Hague-based International Criminal Court along with Gadhafi of attacking civilian protesters in the early days of the popular uprising. The case against Gadhafi was dropped after he was killed.

Other family members also fled to other countries, but their whereabouts are largely known.

The government statement added that Ibrahim was captured at one of the checkpoints outside Bani Walid, where fighting has raged for the past four days as government forces seek to retake the town.

Fighters of the pro-government Libya Shield militia have besieged the town, some 140 kilometers (90 miles) southeast of Tripoli, for the past several weeks, blaming residents for the death of a well-known anti-Gadhafi rebel.

An official at Misrata Hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said seven Libya Shield fighters were killed in Saturday's fighting and 120 injured.

Parts of Bani Walid, a collection of settlements in a well-guarded valley, are under government control, according to Mohammed al-Zubedi, a local official allied to Tripoli.

Residents in Bani Walid say the pro-government forces, which are comprised largely of the militias that overthrew Gadhafi a year, are indiscriminately shelling the town.

John Vespasian: Do your ethics make sense? Personal ...

From all branches of philosophy, ethics is the most practical. Values connect abstractions to decisions and morality provides guidelines to surmount difficult situations. Ethical systems are worthless if they are not aligned with reality and validated by facts.

Ethical systems can be grouped in three types

History has produced hundreds of different ethical teachings that work well in specific circumstances but fail catastrophically in other contexts. Fortunately, we can see if those philosophies pass the tests of veracity and practicality without having to examine them one by one. For the purpose of analysis, ethical systems can be grouped in three main types: the partial, the logical, and the teleological.

1. Partial or fragmentary ethics

Partial or fragmentary ethics consist of one or several precepts that are not comprehensive enough to constitute a system of thought. The vast majority of ethical convictions held by people can be classified as partial ethics.

Let me underline that moral principles enunciated in this manner are not necessarily false. Sometimes, flawless albeit incomplete guidelines are predicated; on other occasions, utter nonsense is put forward as ethical precept.

As examples of two well-meaning commandments, take for instance "protect the planet" and "help other people." Individuals who advocate such ethics usually possess good intentions, but their formulations are so fragmentary that cannot be implemented consistently.

If you want to protect the planet, you have first to define "planet." Does it involve only mountains or also animals and trees? If the concept encompasses animals, should it not include human beings as well? If plants and micro-organisms are both part of the planet, should you protect them from each other? Interesting questions, for which partial ethics cannot provide unassailable answers.

If your only ethical principle is to help other people, how do you determine which individuals you should assist with priority? If person A is expected to help person B, is person B required to help person A? What happens if B has a different opinion? Who will settle disagreements on the meaning and scope of the word "help"?

Partial ethics are unsatisfactory because they do not work in all circumstances. Principles such as those mentioned above are correct if applied in a certain context, but cannot be stretched to a full-blown system of morality. Life is too complex to navigate if you know only one thing. Man requires a thinking methodology, not just a list of unconnected precepts.

2. Logical ethical systems

Logical systems of ethics represent a major step forward in human thought. Their purpose is to create a morality that answers all questions, a method that can be applied to all events without incurring contradictions. In History, partial ethics often evolve to logical moral systems after it becomes obvious that man cannot make rational decisions on the basis of isolated precepts.

In contrast to partial ethics, logical moral systems are consistent. Their principles and guidelines are linked to each other. Their conclusions aim at universality in space and permanence in time. A well-rounded moral system should be able to guide individuals in any situation that they may encounter in their private or professional lives.

The "categorical imperative" originated by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is the best known system of logical ethics. According to Kant, true principles of morality must be universal, non-contradictory, and recognizable by reason. Decisions and actions are considered virtuous if they can be elevated to universal rules for all men.

"Do not steal" and "do not murder" are just two specific applications of the categorical imperative. Kantian ethics do not address simply a few situations, but all alternatives of human action. Logical ethical systems do not just provide recommendations for isolated cases, but a complete thinking methodology.

Nonetheless, these morality systems suffer from an inherent weakness. They are superior to partial ethics because they are non-contradictory, but internal consistency does not guarantee usefulness. Kantian morality is an intellectual clockwork foreign to the richness of human experience; it is a cold machinery that functions without feeling, ambition, passion, or hesitation.

Categorical imperatives forbid man to attack his neighbour but they won't tell him what he needs to do to be happy. Logical systems of ethics deal with the psychological aspects of human action only to a minor extent. Kantian morality won't provide you guidelines on how to define personal goals, allocate resources, and deal effectively with adversity.

3. Teleological systems of ethics

Teleological systems of ethics are the best that philosophy has produced. On the one hand, they go beyond the isolated commandments of partial morality; on the other hand, they aim at providing a comprehensive and consistent methodology, just like logical ethics. In addition, teleological systems render morality alive by linking it to an overriding goal, namely, happiness.

The word "teleological" comes from the Greek term "telos" which means purpose or goal. Advanced systems of ethics go far beyond "do not steal" and "do not murder." They view the human condition as a complex combination of factors that need to be judged according to general values and prioritized according to individual objectives.

A teleological morality based on reason provides a frame of thought that encompasses all of man's decisions and actions. This system of ethics aims not only at keeping you out of trouble, but also at helping you make the best of your life. The list of teleological virtues includes not only honesty and justice, but also independence, ambition, and persistence.

Which is the best ethical system?

If you want to make optimal choices, you should adopt a teleological system of ethics based on reason. Other approaches to morality are workable in certain conditions, but fail to pass the tests of universality, permanence, consistency, and comprehensiveness.

Torture Circus

It is the year 1925, in a world where Circus' use mutants as a way to make money. The world may seem bleak to a certain group of mutants, but with the help from a few humans, they all might be able to find the life they are searching for.

Here we will discuss already established relationships between our characters before we start.

Remember, all the human leads are friends. The mutant leads all work and live with the Torture Circus, so they probably have some sort of relationship as well, with the minimum being that they know about one another and have spoken on occasion.

So feel free to come up with some suggestions and what not, we can work things out here or you guys can contact one another through PM. I'll write some suggestions myself, and not just for my character. Feel free to take what you will from what I put out there.

Microsoft Debuts Music Service To Take On Apple And Amazon

Bangalore: Microsoft?s goodie basket is to offer yet another surprise; Xbox Music, a digital music service that will be available on Xbox game consoles from Tuesday, as per company?s announcement-- a service to vie with Apple?s iTunes and Amazon?s Cloud Player.

The service will be extended to the devices running on Windows software like, computers, tablets, and it will be included in upcoming Microsoft?s tablet ?Surface?, available from 26 October, the launch date of Windows 8. The service will then be extended to phones too.

Microsoft, the world?s largest software maker, since from a couple of years was trying to mark its presence as a household entertainer, and the company?s hot product Xbox in this segment has recorded a staggering 67million units sales since 2005. An analysis which was carried out in a year and half ago, revealed that, the users are spending more than 60 percent of their time on entertainment services than gaming on Xbox. ?????????

The hit gaming console already streams Netflix, ESPN, and other channels, and considering the Xbox?s presence across large number of households, the company?s decision to add music and video content, came at right time.??

"We also realize, as an entertainment company, that music is an important ingredient on its own and as a part of different user experiences," said Music general manager Jerry Johnson.

Replacing Microsoft?s media brand Zune that struggled to compete with iTunes, Xbox offers a free ad-supported music streaming, and with premium of $9.99, one can get unlimited ad free streaming. The service also includes a download-to-own music store, with collection of more than 30 million songs on its global catalog, crossing iTunes? library of over 26 million songs. And 70,000 music videos exclusively available on Xbox console.

The service also sports cloud storage feature, like iTunes and Amazon, and an artist-based radio function like music streaming services Pandora and Spotify. ?

Xbox Music will be available across 22 countries, and Microsoft is hoping to make avail this service to iOS and Android based devices by next year.

Where to Look for Tax Forclosure Homes for Sale ? Real Estate ...

law_scale_background.jpg

Tax forclosure homes for sale are all over the country today. It is up to you, the buyer, to take advantage of them. Tax foreclosures occur when property owners become unable to pay the taxes of their properties. When this happens, the government tax agency repossesses the property with the intention of selling it. Since maintaining the property will only cost the agency money, the agency will try to sell the property as soon as possible, even at a lower price. This explains why properties under Jefferson City Foreclosures list are priced lower than market value.

If you are looking for tax forclosure homes for sale, then the internet should be one of your first destinations. There are now many websites that allow you to access foreclosure listings in various states. Some websites offer a free service while some require a small fee. To make sure that you use the best service possible, most websites will offer you a free trial before you agree to subscribe to the service.

When choosing a service, you also need to ensure that the site constantly updates its Jefferson City foreclosures list and other foreclosure listings. In fact, this is one of the most important things that you need to ensure when choosing a foreclosure listing service. You don?t want to have your heart set on a particular property only to find out that it has already been sold a couple of weeks ago.

Once you have browsed the tax forclosure homes for sale and you have decided to buy a property, you might want to consider hiring a real estate agent to help you with your purchase. Just make sure that the realtor is not working on behalf of the seller.

Now, try us on E-ForeclosureSearch.com. We assure to you an excellent service as well as up-to-date listings of foreclosures for sale.

We've Been Asking the Wrong Question! (by Ricky Kirk) | SBC Voices

Ricky Kirk blogs at Panta ta Ethne.

I was listening to Pastor Mark Sparks, youth pastor for Journey Youth Ministries at Tri-State Worship Center last night. He mentioned something that served to be a missing piece of the puzzle I?ve been working on this last 18 months. In beginning the initial exploration stages of planting a missional community, I have read much about engaging culture, reaching neighbors, and building long-term discipling relationships. Part of that is examining my tendency in relationship building as well as listening to the stories of others. Here?s what I have stumbled upon?

How many times do we as Christians only associate with other Christians while we are gathered together for ?church? or some other ?church? event. Outside of blood family or extremely close-life-long friends, the tendency I observe is that our relationships are not truly centered on Christ, our common creed, or even our denomination. Rather, the relationship tends to be centered on the ?church? service.

For example, Family A attends Church A for three years. They build relationships with many families inside the church and see each other regularly (just about every Sunday morning, occasionally on Sunday nights and sporadically on Wednesday nights). They share prayer requests, discuss details of their lives in Sunday School class, and serve together in several ministries throughout these three years. However, they rarely see each other, much less talk to each other, outside of said services or ministries.

Because of a job transfer, Family A moves to a new community 20 miles from Church A. Considering the price of gas and other factors, they begin attending Church B. Over the course of weeks, Family A notices they rarely hear from any of their ?friends? or ?church family? from Church A. They scratch their head and try to figure out why they haven?t received a phone call or a visit from their friends. In the meantime, they begin the process of assimilating into the life of Church B and over time repeat the same experience they maintained at Church A.

One day Family A is at the local grocery store and they run into a close friend from Church A. As they spot each other this friend loudly exclaims, ?Where have you been? I haven?t seen you in months.? This deeply hurts Family A; they believed they had a relationship with this friend. ?How could this friend ask such a question? Didn?t they know they moved because of a job transfer? Didn?t they care enough to stay connected??

This is when Family A begins to understand their relationship was centered on the church proper, nothing more. Remove the church, remove the relationship. The tendency is for these hurt feelings to turn to bitterness, not just to those families, but also to church in general and other relationships in particular. They become guarded in building any relationship with those in Church B and struggle with other relationships.

If my hunch is correct, there are many families and individuals out there who have experienced something very similar. These feelings have crippled far too many from building relationships with other Christians and builds a barrier to engaging in the life of the church. Because of this, they are less likely to build any type of discipling relationship with others. Period.

?What can be done about this?? I?m glad you asked. I think we?ve been asking the wrong question. Instead of questioning why our friends ask where we?ve been, we should be the ones taking the initiative and asking how they are! Rather than wait for months to pass and allow hurt feelings to develop, Family A should make every effort to continue those relationships. Family A should keep contact by phone, email, FB or other means. It is too easy for Family A not to do those things and then wait until someone asks about them. That provides them the opportunity to blame them for not maintain the friendship. However reality is both families are at fault. Neither did what was needed to continue the relationship. The naked truth, they have a relationship with the church building that exceeds the relationship with the body of believers.

Proverbs 17:17?declares, ?a friend loves at all times?? This not dependent on location, life-stage nor on the church one attends. We have taken that sentiment and changed it to say, ?a friend loves at all times when they come to my church; when we worship together; when we are in the same Sunday School class.? We cannot hold on to truth in one hand and then add to it with the other hand.

I am aware of this because I am guilty of it. I have found myself complaining about relationships that have seemed to be broken all the while expecting others to approach me first. I have been waiting for someone to ask how I?m doing so I can unleash my hurt and bitterness on them. That is wrong. That is sinful.

?Hold on a minute,? you say. What about those relationships that were deepened at church but also included many times sitting around a table eating a meal, sharing holidays together, vacations, and weekend trips? I know, been there? done that! I think it still applies. When the church is removed, then it seems as if the relationship is removed. Although this shouldn?t be the case, it often is the end result.

The only thing I can recommend is to repent of the bitterness and stop making excuses. Make every conceivable gospel-centered effort to continue those relationships sans church. I am not saying you will keep every friend you had, but you will know you made every effort and the chances of hurt feelings and bitterness will be lessened.

We must practice what we hear preached and taught. It is not the church building that unites us nor a denomination. It is the Gospel that unites us. It is at the cross where we gather together and repent of sin and receiving forgiveness. It is here we find the perfect picture of what Christ told the disciples in?John 15:13-15?about no greater love being displayed than when a man lays down his life for his friends.

Ephesians 4:31-32?tell us to put away anger and bitterness (among other things) and to forgive just as we have been forgiven. There is nothing more sad than a Christian who has been forgiven refusing to forgive others!

So what are you waiting for, make that call, send that text, FB someone and let them know you are sorry you haven?t kept up with them and ask for their forgiveness. Rather than asking where they have been, ask them how they are doing!

(AP) ? Crews planned to resume their search Friday morning for a man still missing two days after a parking garage collapsed at Miami Dade College's west campus, killing three construction workers.

The missing man's family huddled nearby Thursday waiting for word as workers searched through piles of twisted steel and concrete. A portion of the five-story garage fell to the ground around noon Wednesday.

The search was expected to get under way around 8 a.m. Friday.

A police officer who spoke with relatives at the site Thursday said it could take days to find someone in the rubble. When family members asked whether survival was possible, the officer tried to offer encouragement. Afterward, though, several turned their backs to the rubble and sobbed.

"We break down and we console each other," said Steve Budhoo, who identified his brother as the missing worker. "We are just going through the motions."

Two workers were pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the collapse. A third man, Samuel Perez, 53, was pulled from the piles of wreckage early Thursday after being trapped for about 13 hours. He died a short time after being flown to a Miami hospital.

Perez and the two other confirmed fatalities ? Jose Calderon and Carlos Hurtado de Mendoza ? worked for subcontractors of the firm handling the construction of the five-story garage, Ajax Building Corp.

Ajax CEO Bill Byrne said the accident happened as crews were putting in a "spandrel beam" on the day of the collapse. The beam, a five-story, pre-cast concrete puzzle piece that was to attach to an elevator shaft, was still hanging from a crane near the wreckage Thursday.

Byrne said the project was utilizing pre-cast concrete construction, in which massive concrete pieces are created off-site and put into place by construction workers. Observers said the method has been around since about the 1950s and in recent decades has become the most common method of garage construction, largely because it is more cost-effective.

The cause of Wednesday's collapse hasn't been determined. Byrne said there was "no warning whatsoever."

The $22.5 million project began in February and the 1,855-space garage was to be finished in December, according to Ajax's website. The first floor was to have classroom and office space. No students were near the construction site when the structure fell.

The campus was evacuated and closed for the rest of the week.

The science of breaking up via space station re-entry investigation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? When an aerospace engineer says breaking up is hard to do, they are not referring to matters of the heart. Instead, they are looking at best practices for the breakup of large items returning from space to Earth. Understanding what happens during this process is the goal of the ReEntry Breakup Recorder, or REBR. This device hitched a ride on the European Space Agency's Automated Transfer Vehicle-3, or ATV-3, as it departed the International Space Station and re-entered Earth's atmosphere on Oct 2, 2012.

A better grasp of large item breakups could help economize deorbit efforts by aiding engineers as they develop best practices for efficient and safe decommissioning. For some vehicles, such as the Russian Soyuz, this is not a problem -- they are designed to survive re-entry. One-time-use vehicles, however, have any remaining debris targeted for a harmless ocean splashdown. This is where REBR comes in. Think of it as a space vehicle "black box" in a copper shell that can help researchers to find out exactly what happens during re-entry.

In a recent interview, William Ailor, Ph.D. and principal investigator for REBR, spoke of the goals for this study. "What we'd like to know is at what altitude do things come apart? What is the heating? There's some evidence that models, at least prior to this time, have over predicted heating at higher altitudes, which means that you would predict that less survives than actually does," said Ailor. "So one of our objectives with this REBR experiment is to get some definitive data on how objects respond as they re-enter the atmosphere."

The space station crew attaches the REBR hardware to a re-entering vehicle prior to undocking. REBR then records real-time data from the point where the vehicle first senses the atmosphere to splashdown, as the unmanned cargo vessel burns up around it. After the host vehicle breaks apart and REBR releases, REBR makes something similar to a cell phone call to transmit data to a ground computer prior to impact.

The suite of sensors inside of REBR includes the following: a GPS receiver, temperature sensors, accelerometers and rate gyros, a pressure sensor, various electronics, an Iridium modem, a combination GPS/Iridium antenna, and batteries. The exterior shape of the device follows specifications developed by NASA's Langley Research Center that make the device self-stabilizing after release from its copper shell. NASA's Ames Research Center provided preliminary designs for the REBR heat shield and conducted wind tunnel tests to verify subsonic stability -- important for successful transmission of recorded data.

Previous REBR experiments provided data when the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's H-II Transfer Vehicle, or HTV-2, and HTV-3 re-entered the atmosphere, with both vehicles breaking up over the Pacific Ocean. ATV-2 also included REBR hardware, but did not transfer information back. The cause of that data loss is thought to be an explosion of ATV-2 before REBR released from the vehicle.

There is also a safety element associated when large items return from space. "I would say the general rule of thumb is anything that weighs more than 800 kg is something that we would be concerned about, but it depends on what the components of the object are made of and their size and mass, as well," said Ailor. "Experience tells us that anywhere from 10% to 40% of an object's dry mass on orbit will survive to hit the ground, so that means that you have to have an object of sufficient size that has big enough surviving fragments to be a hazard."

Researchers hope to simplify re-entry trajectories for launch vehicles and satellites with their findings, as well as to engineer crafts to come apart in controlled ways -- what they call "design for demise." Experts can use the REBR data to design space hardware that is more predictable and safer when it re-enters. The knowledge gained from understanding how vehicles behave during atmospheric re-entry also means a more cost-effective spacecraft.

"One of the ways for removing space debris from orbit, or removing it as a long-term concern, is to re-enter it into the atmosphere," said Ailor. "There are basically two ways to re-enter things, one is to do it like we are doing it with the ATV-3, which is direct into the ocean, but that can be expensive for somebody who is operating a spacecraft. So if we can lower the hazard sufficiently for these large objects, they could be allowed to re-enter randomly and that reduces the cost substantially for spacecraft operators."

Another way engineers can improve vehicles is to ensure they disintegrate into less hazardous fragments, based on their design. Some may even be eligible for natural decay in orbit. This would mean the item could re-enter without the expensive propellants and operations associated with a controlled deorbit, reducing costs and prolonging the life of the vehicle.

REBR data will contribute to survivability models, as well, which help determine risk assessments and strategies for re-entry. This goes back to the design for demise, which can improve future exploration vehicle engineering, as well as protect people from breakups here on Earth -- though when it comes to breakups of the heart, humans are still on their own.

US: Hackers in Iran responsible for cyberattacks

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the threat of computer attacks from Iran has grown and he says the Pentagon is prepared to take action.

A former U.S. official says authorities believe Iranian-based hackers are responsible for cyberattacks that devastated Persian Gulf oil and gas companies.

The former official is familiar with the investigation and says U.S. authorities believe the attacks were probably backed by Tehran and came in retaliation for the latest round of American sanctions.

Panetta, in a speech Thursday to business leaders in New York City, said they were probably the most destructive cyber assault the private sector has seen so far. He did not, however, directly link Iran to the Gulf attacks.

Deep-sea vehicle Alvin gets splashy makeover

Humans have explored only a tiny fraction of the deep-sea floor, but the deep-diving submersible vehicle Alvin gets credit for a considerable share of what humanity has seen in the water's dark, alien depths.

Alvin, which can ferry three people into the deep sea, has made 4,664 dives since its first in 1965. Alvin has explored the wreckage of the doomed Titanic, revealed otherworldly life flourishing at hydrothermal vents and their cooler counterparts, cold seeps. Most recently, Alvin was dispatched to investigate the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

After all of these missions, Alvin is getting an upgrade.

A new sphere ? the part of the submersible in which a pilot and two scientists travel ? has been forged from titanium, and workers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts, Alvin's home base, have begun the process of rebuilding the rest of the storied submersible.

After ensuring the sphere fit within Alvin's frame, workers removed the sphere and are now bolting flotation material called syntactic foam, the main ballast system, the battery box and other systems onto the frame. The interior of the sphere still needs to be built and instrumentation installed within it, said Susan Humphris, the scientist leading the upgrade project. [ See Photos of Alvin and Its Deep-Sea Adventures ]

She said she expects Alvin to be reassembled by the end of the year. Manned testing is expected to begin by March with the first deep dive off Bermuda in April 2013.

A successful dive in April would complete the first half of the two-stage upgrade process intended to enable Alvin to dive deeper, carry more samples, extend the reach of its arms, take better pictures, and provide its passengers and pilot with a more comfortable ride and a better view, Humphris said.

The first stage of the upgrade, which is under way, is estimated to cost $40.9 million. However, the timing of the second stage remains uncertain, pending funding and technological developments. Power is a big part of the problem.

The first-stage upgrades involve changes that don't require more power. For example, the new 6.5-foot-diameter (2 meters) sphere is slightly larger than its predecessor and has slightly larger portholes, or windows, in an improved configuration. Its interior will feature a curved bench on which occupants can lie or kneel, Humphris said.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Giant eyeball found ? but whose is it?

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: A giant eyeball that washed ashore and was found by a beachcomber in Pompano Beach, Fla., is mystifying wildlife officials ? but probably not for long.

    2. Spot where Caesar was stabbed discovered
    3. Dogs suffer PTSD-like stress after Japan disaster
    4. Farmer finds Maya murals under plaster

But perhaps the most significant upgrade, extending the depth to which Alvin can dive from 15,000 feet (4,500 m) to 21,000 feet (6,500 m), isn't yet happening. The problem: Diving deeper requires more power.

Alvin has used lead-acid batteries, like those in a car, to power itself on dives. But to extend its depth range, Alvin needs a battery upgrade. The easiest choice for an improvement would be lithium-ion batteries, but this technology isn't yet safe enough to be used on a routine basis in a manned submarine.

"Our hope is that it could be done when the Alvin goes through its next major overhaul in five
years," Humphris told LiveScience. Every five years, Alvin is completely disassembled for maintenance.

In its current configuration, Alvin's diving capability allows it to reach the bottom of about two-thirds of the ocean. At the extended rangeAlvin is expected to be able to reach 98 percent of the seafloor, Humphris said. [ Gallery: Unique Life at Antarctic Deep-Sea Vents ]

But even with its diving range extended, Alvin will be far from the deepest diving submersible. In March, James Cameron dove 6.8 miles (11,000 m) in the western Pacific in a privately funded vehicle. And in June, China tested its own submersible below 23,000 feet (7,000 m).

The new titanium sphere, forged in Wisconsin, is now at WHOI, where Alvin?s pilots have begun rebuilding the vehicle. (The pilots do assembly work so they are intimately familiar with the vehicle, Humphris said.)

The titanium frame into which the sphere will fit is not yet completed, but work is continuing using a steel mockup until the real thing is ready.

Humphris, a geologist, said she stopped counting her dives in Alvin after her 30th trip.

"The bottom of the ocean is close to freezing, so you take a lot of sweaters, coats and gloves and socks down with you," she said. The cooling has an uncomfortable repercussion: "the water vapor condenses out and it trickles down the inside of the hull, [so] you are leaning against the hull and there is this cold trickle of water going down your back."

The journey to the bottom of the ocean takes roughly two hours each way, leaving about five hours of a dive spent on the bottom.

"You have got limited time ? We don't even stop and eat lunch once we are on the bottom, you just work, and you usually have a long list of tasks to accomplish so that is probably the most stressful time," she said.
